Defense, being a superpower has the major economical factors of meaning large army.
Now for this, other thigns suffer, such as Health and Education, meaning that as a whole the society will stagnate as new ideas can’t spread through education and Health is the way you keep people around to remember the old.
Spending, especially social spending.
