Do you know the one thing in common with at least 3 of the 7 states that are the worst for puppy mills?

Cass_17_7 asked:

I was researching puppy mills and read that Iowa, Missouri, and Pennsylvania along with 4 other states are considered the worst when it comes to puppy mills. I felt bad because I live in Iowa. Then I thought why these states? What do these three states have in common? Simple. We have Amish here. Missouri has Amish. Pennsylvania has Amish. I am correct in assuming this is an acceptable correlation? The Amish can make a pretty penny crafting woodwork. I should know, we bought our dining set and hutch from one. One can certainly make an even prettier penny breeding and selling dogs. So are the majority of these puppy mills owned by the Amish?

I know the ones in Pennsylvania are run by Amish. Most likely the other states also.

  • Brenda:

I live near Lancaster, PA, and the answer is yes, it is the Amish who own most of the puppymills.

It’s time we put a stop to enslaving poor puppies to do the work or mules, being whipped endlessly around the mill wheel, grinding corn until they reach doggie adulthood (if they last that long)…
And their spore is used as methane fuel to power the lights of the puppy-slave trading post known as…
    Barker Town…

  • OntarioGreys:

That is because laws allow them to exist, Ontario has a few large amish communities yet net to no puppymills, if one is found it is quickly shut down

  • rollin_indahay:

    No.

I know quite a few Amish folks, and they raise the typical farm type animals you would expect, not dogs. They also, as you said, build fine furniture, sell baked goods and homemade candies and such, eggs and meat from their chickens, handcrafted quilts….not puppies. Most of them have a “farm dog” to work their livestock, usually some kind of Border Collie type. There are a couple that will have an occasional litter, but it seems to be when there are folks needing more farm dogs.

I also can tell you where several puppy mills are, and they are all run by greedy “regular” folks.

No, believe it or not, the Amish do not do puppy mills. Mill owners come from all denomiations, every creed, color and income bracket. It is animal hording gone amuck under the guise of breeding. Generally it is considered a mental illness when someone hordes, but when a “breeder” does it, it is considered cruelty because of the confinment isues, lack of medical care recieved, and lack of daily care. I have never heard of an Amish mill. Usually they are just people like your neighbors, just with a poor sense of judgment of what is proper.

There are a few Amish puppy mills here in Indaina. BIG ones. The kind with the cages stacked 4 high in LONG rows outside and who breed any little dogs they can gt their grubby hands on. These people have no electricity! They have no computers, they have no CLUE that what they are doing is horrific. They treat dogs like livestock. They don’t see vets. They have signs at the end of their road and this is a way of life for the ones here. It’s sad. A couple of others have been shut down.
That said…. The majority of puppy mills are run by pure white trash. I think they out number the amish 10 fold!

  • mom tree:

Sorry…I live in Pennsilvania and know for a FACT that puppy mills are NOT being run by the Amish!!!!!
I have worked with Puppy rescue groups and I can assure that NEVER ONCE has one of the puppy mill raids “EVER” been Amish or Memonite run.
The only animals Amish communities would consider to raise are those that work the farm or feed the family and the wood work they do is expensive because it is ALL hand made, even to how the lumber was cut!!!!
Sad…so sad to accuse a sect of people because you do not understand them. Please KNOW your facts before you accuse.
